What is Reiki?
Reiki is a Japanese form of energy work. The term comes from two Japanese words, "Rei," meaning "universal," and "Ki," or "life force energy." Reiki loosely translates to "universal life-force energy."
Reiki is increasingly used as a stress reduction and relaxation technique that also promotes healing.
What is energy work?
Energy work is a complementary therapy that helps to bring mind, body, and spirit into balance.
Similar to acupuncture in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and yoga in Ayurveda, Reiki operates on the premise that in addition to having a human body, we also have an inner energy field, or spirit, or life force. Life force energy (also known as chi and prana in other traditions) flows throughout the physical body, nourishing physiological functions, while transmitting a vibrational field others can often feel.
When life force energy is low, we are at higher risk of becoming sick or stressed; when it is high, we are more likely to be healthy, happy and stable.
How does Reiki work?
Reiki practitioners are trained to detect, as well as increase, the volume of vital energy throughout the client’s body.
In a treatment the practitioner gently places their hands on (or hovers them over) the client’s head, torso, back, and legs. The client is fully-clothed. The practitioner stays in hand placements for various lengths of time, depending on how much Reiki energy is needed to address the specific area or concerns.
Throughout the session Reiki energy is channeled through the practitioner to the client, flowing to areas where there may be energetic imbalances or blockages. Reiki raises the vibrational field in and around the negatively affected areas of the body, causing blockages to start to move and be released. In so doing Reiki helps to restore a healthy, natural flow of life force.
Benefits of Reiki
While Reiki is always safe and beneficial for the client, the felt benefits will be different depending on the person and number of sessions.
Most consistently clients feel relaxed and at peace during a treatment. It is common for clients to fall asleep. Oftentimes the client will release emotion or have memories or healing insights surface.
As with other healing modalities, the impact of Reiki is cumulative, with clients experiencing progressively deeper benefits over time. With multiple sessions in a short period of time, it is common to experience improved sleep, less stress and anxiety, reduction in chronic pain, and improved mood.
